Dr Robert Schoch stunned the world with his geological analysis of the Great Sphinx of Egypt in the early 1990s, demonstrating that the monument, as well as the walls of its enclosure, bear the scars of extreme water weathering and erosion. As Egypt has known hyper-arid climactic conditions for the past five millennia, Schoch concluded the monument traces its origins to an earlier epoch and a previously unidentified civilization, disrupting the orthodox view of the rise of civilization.
Schoch’s courageous assertions have been confirmed with the discovery of the astoundingly sophisticated 12,000-year-old megalithic complex of Göbekli Tepe in southeastern Turkey. Initially placing the Great Sphinx in the period of circa 7000–5000 BCE, much earlier than its standard attribution of circa 2500 BCE, new data and discoveries have led Schoch to now push the monument back to the end of Earth’s last ice age, a glacial period brought to a close by massive solar events almost 10,000 years before Christ
Schoch’s career and interests extend beyond strict geology and geophysics—to anthropology, environmental science, and biology/paleontology. Schoch is the author of numerous books and articles both technical and popular that have been translated into multiple languages, including Forgotten Civilization: The Role of Solar Outbursts in Our Past and Future. He has reached audiences around the world via television, radio, live presentations, and the Internet. The Emmy-winning documentary The Mystery of the Sphinx, which first aired on NBC, remains a favorite among audiences. In acknowledgement of his scientific contributions to the study of ancient civilizations, in 2014 Schoch was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy in Varna, Bulgaria. Schoch and his wife, Catherine Ulissey, travel the world in their pursuit of a deeper understanding of humanity’s past. He has been a full-time faculty member at Boston University since 1984, and earned his Ph.D in geology and geophysics at Yale University.

ICE AGE CIVILIZATIONS AND A SOLAR CATACLYSM: EVENTS THAT CHANGED THE WORLD 12,000 YEARS AGO
In this presentation Schch will first review his groundbreaking work recasting the date of the Great Sphinx, supported by his recent studies of the 12,000-year-old site of Göbekli Tepe in Turkey, the latest research at Gunung Padang in Indonesia, and his reassessment of the indigenous culture of Easter Island – all of which confirm his theory that true civilization dates back to the end of the last ice age. But the advanced civilizations of circa 10,000 BCE did not last – in fact, they all but totally disappeared in a flash. Why?
A reinterpretation of the mysterious rongorongo texts of Easter Island, connecting the message of the glyphs to cutting-edge research in plasma physics, combined with geological data make it clear that solar outbursts and plasma discharges brought about the rapid end of the last ice age and the demise of the early civilizations of that period. Pockets of survivors escaped by literally going underground, as attested to by the caves and subterranean cities in the Cappadocia region of Anatolia and elsewhere. Humanity was thrown into a solar-induced dark age that lasted thousands of years before the re-emergence of civilization circa 4000 to 3000 BCE. COSMIC PATTERNS, SOLAR OUTBURSTS AND CYCLES OF CIVILIZATION
Many ancient and indigenous cultures speak of Earth cycles and cycles of civilization. This is expressed in such traditions as the Hindu Yuga Cycle, the World Ages of the Maya, Zodiacal Ages — we are currently transitioning from the Age of Pisces to that of Aquarius — and the classical concept of Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Iron Ages. These notions are often dismissed as mythological nonsense by orthodox academics, but Dr. Schoch has found evidence in support of their reality. With his re-dating of the Great Sphinx of Egypt in the 1990s, he placed the origin of civilization thousands of years earlier than previously believed. But something catastrophic happened. As Dr. Schoch will make clear, the Sun goes through cycles of relative stability and quiescence punctuated by major solar outbursts. Today, with our modern technology, we are incredibly vulnerable to such solar cycles, but with knowledge and foresight we can collectively make preparations for the future.
CIVILIZATIONS A, B, C & BEYOND? EXPLORING THE EVIDENCE FOR SOPHISTICATED CULTURES IN THE DEEP PAST
Informally, Dr. Schoch has referred to the current round of civilization (approximately the last 5,000 years) as “Civilization A.” Going back in time, the cycle of civilization that was decimated at the end of the last ice age – most notably Göbekli Tepe in Turkey and the proto-Sphinx complex in Egypt — can be referred to informally as “Civilization B”. But were there cycles of civilization preceding Civilization B? Based on the evidence, can we make the case for a Civilization C in remote antiquity, or a Civilization D, or an earlier civilization still? Could the enigmatic site of Marcahuasi high in the Peruvian Andes, or the site of Tiahuanaco in Bolivia, record aspects of Civilization C or even D? What about the Paleolithic peoples of Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, including forms commonly known as Cro-Magnons, Denisovans, and Neanderthals? Has the level of sophistication of these cultures been sorely underestimated? Might they represent aspects of Civilization D or earlier?
