On this eerie but glitzy edition of After Hours AM/America’s Most Haunted Radio — Thursdays 9-11pE with hosts Joel Sturgis and Eric Olsen — we explore old haunted Hollywood with RED WITCH and GRAVES’ END novelist Sean Patrick Traver. Sean joins us at 10pE; at 9pE Joel and ERic review the week’s hottest paranormal news from the America’s Most Haunted Twitter feed.
Sean Patrick Traver was born and raised in Los Angeles, the city he chronicles, where he continues to live with enough books to bury him in the event of an earthquake. He is a member of the LA chapter of the Horror Writers’ Association, and also works as a bookseller at the world famous Iliad Bookshop in North Hollywood. His interest in all things odd and occult predates the Bush administration. As soon as he learned to read, he had a voracious appetite for ghosts, witches, monsters, and their pop-culture appearances as well.
Today his writing explores haunted Hollywood, the hidden worlds that lurk behind the sleek facade LA presents to a casual observer. In addition to the traffic, the film studios, and the cookie-cutter suburbs, there are opulent courtyards and private gardens high up in the Hills, as well as blank, black-market warehouses crouched down in the Valley below. There are ritual shrines hidden near the hiking trails and secret practitioners who summon spirits left over from a thousand years of history. Some people even say there’s a Hole in the Sky above the city, and that it opens onto the ancient Aztec Realm of the Dead… although exactly where it is and how one reaches it is a matter of much debate among the local magical operators.
Sean’s novels of haunted Hollywood include RED WITCH: THE TALES OF INGRID REDSTONE and GRAVES’ END: A MAGICAL THRILLER.
RED WITCH
1910. Actress, occultist, and bohemian adventurer Ingrid Redstone travels to the fledgling city of Los Angeles in search of a legendary Hole in the Sky, said to be a portal to the Aztec afterlife. On the far side of it Ingrid meets Mictlantecuhtli, an ancient and bloodthirsty deity who soon becomes dangerously fascinated with the first living woman he’s ever met. Ingrid is no less entranced by ‘Mickey’ and his realm, where the totality of human remembrance is theirs to explore. But their dangerous relationship may have unforeseen consequences for both this world and the next when Ingrid is faced with the choice of becoming the privileged yet powerless queen of the dead, or attempting to thwart her supernatural lover’s unnatural ambitions
GRAVES’ END
Los Angeles PI Dexter Graves was pretty sure his life ended back in 1950, after femme fatale Ingrid Redstone shot him through the head. When Graves involuntarily rises from his grave sixty years later, he finds himself drawn to freelance sorceress Lia Flores, who introduces him to an underworld he never could’ve imagined–a place where magic and crime intersect. Suburban shamans, rogue necromancers, criminal cabals and computer-savvy mages all co-exist (often uneasily) within the secret cityscape Lia has learned to call her home.
