Blasting Off with “Mars Experience VR” at SXSW Virtual reality creates highly detailed and accurate simulation of the surface of Mars
Listening to the Mars Experience VR panel, I thought at first this was a lot of effort to go through for a VR experience, but along the way I began to appreciate and discover the more serious purpose of this effort. The Mars Experience VR panel consisted of five heavyweights in technology and space flight.

An entire nation of The Walking Dead watchers is feeling very twitchy and jumpy right about now as the hours tick down to what is arguably the most anticipated episode ever of AMC’s unlikely smash hit. Why so edgy? Since it was announced last November that Jeffrey Dean Morgan would play Negan, the dreaded leader of the villainous Saviors, and make his appearance in the final episode of Season 6, there has been constant speculation as to the consequences of that freighted debut.

Born Millicent Lilian Entwistle in 1908 Wales, Peg Entwistle came to Hollywood by way of Broadway in New York. After a number of successful roles on stage, and capturing the attention of a then-unknown Bette Davis, she moved to Los Angeles with high hopes of breaking into pictures. read moreWeird Easter – What’s Up with the Easter Bunny? The big goofy rabbit hops around the world delivering baskets full of colored eggs and candy to the kiddies
The bunny-egg-spring combo can be neatly traced to an ancient Teutonic myth. The goddess of fertility, dawn, and spring Ostara (aka Eostre or Eastre) is passing through a forest one snowy winter day and finds a bird expiring from cold and hunger. The goddess turns the bird into a hare because they have warm coats and can find food more easily than birds in winter. The bunny handily survives the winter and when spring came begins laying eggs — much to the surprise of its fellow hares — because it still had some bird plumbing.

Phantasm qualifies in that category and I guess I’m terminally curious because I found myself standing in line with fans of the 1979 cult classic. The “debut” aspect of this screening was that the film was remastered to 4K by J.J. Abrams’ company, Bad Robot. Abrams introduced the film and, after the screening, Coscarelli and cast members answered questions from the audience.

read moreThe Strange Life of St. Patrick Who was the man behind the worldwide celebration of Irishness?
Originally a solemn feast day to commemorate the life of the saint, St. Patrick’s Day picked up its party image in Ireland fairly early. After the church service, celebrants were granted special dispensation to eat meat and drink alcohol, the lone break for such festivities during Lent.
