LUCIFER on Fox – Sympathy for the Devil Can even the Prince of Darkness be redeemed?
Lucifer is ultimately a character study and morality play in the form of a police procedural with Ellis’s Lucifer displaying more than a little of the fish-out-of-water indignation of Sleepy Hollow’s Ichabod Crane to help keep things fun amidst the crime and carnage. Also adding to the fun are all the corny “speak of the devil” puns and the fact that the former Prince of Darkness is always quite open as to his identity — um, the name is a pretty big clue — but no one ever believes him. Other than those few with whom he is truly vexed and shows his true appearance, and they are driven mad, but they were bad in the first place.

Slenderman did become “real” when humans believed he was real and took action accordingly. This is the ultimate compliment for a meme — “an idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture” — when it jumps from concept bandied about on the Internet, to causation in the real world. Suddenly, Slenderman was “fleshed out,” so to speak.

Most importantly, THE X-FILES 2016 has seen the reestablishment of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s Mulder and Scully as one of the most iconic pairs in TV history. Other than the rather joyless opening ep, which was perhaps inevitably heavy on exposition and table setting, this has been an immensely satisfying season with a wider emotional range than we have seen before from the stars and their characters. That emotional range has been built upon a potentially very sensitive matter: their respective mid-life crises.

Director Robbie Pickering never sticks to neither a character-oriented film nor a splatterfest, and the results can sometimes be a little jarring. But for what it’s worth, Freaks of Nature features a great video/audio combo to keeps the laughs flying and ensures anyone interested won’t be left wanting more. It is what it is — a horror comedy — and for a straight-to-video affair, it’s way better than average.

Like many major Western holidays — Christmas, Easter, Halloween — Valentine’s Day has pre-Christian pagan roots, specifically in the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia, which was observed February 13-15 for over 1,000 years before being abolished at the end of the 5th century. Lupercalia was an odd blend of spring purification ritual, fertility rite, and tribute to Lupa, the she-wolf who suckled the infant orphans Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome.
